Bill Royall chose the University of Denver so he could take the winter quarters off from school and hit the slopes. His powder-searching ways continued after college, landing him in Vail for a few years before it eventually became too crowded, too trendy. A move to Aspen ended with the same claustrophobic result. And so it went, Royall's quest for a quiet skiing sanctuary going on for years, taking him to places like Steamboat Springs, Taos, Sun Valley. And it always ended the same: moving out when the crowds moved in.
The nomadic journey seemed to come to an end about 20 years ago when he arrived in Jackson, Wyo., a place still oozing with that dusty-floor saloon charm of the Old West. But, like all the other ski towns that had lured Royall with its charms, Jackson changed, attracting fuzzy-jacket-wearing out-of-towners to the slopes and trendy shops with pricey paintings and sparkly T-shirts lining the streets.
Then Royall found Grand Targhee. A down-home alternative to upscale Jackson Hole, Grand Targhee is a throwback to the days of the small-town ski resorts, the kind of place where lift operators know the regulars' names and the glistening snow is the only sparkle anyone will ever need. "When you go to a lot of big-time resorts, it's a lot of hustle and bustle, glitter and glamour and we don't want that," says Royall, a stone carver from Southport, Maine, who spends three or four months every winter in Grand Targhee with his wife, Emery. "Grand Targhee is a non-threatening ski environment." Grand Targhee's appeal starts with the Tetons, the 13,000-foot peaks that jut dramatically from the high plains like jagged teeth. Reach the top of the main lift and you get a clear view of these craggy mammoths, seemingly a short double-diamond run away. But Grand Targhee is more than just a hill with a view.

Shenkman said that presidents who grow up in humble circumstances — including modest childhood homes — add to the American dream that anybody can be president. "In fact, very few presidents are born poor," Shenkman said. "Obama happens to fit the bill." Obama has said that his unusual life story "spans miles and generations, races and realities." THE CLASSICS La Basilique du Sacré-Coeur, Paris Proposing in Paris may be a cliché, but clichés exist for a reason, especially this one. Near dusk, head to the top of Montmartre; if you can tolerate the steep streets and steps, which aren't too difficult, skip the funicular and go by foot. Walk through Le Moulin de la Galette (the setting for Renoir's masterpiece of the same name), but avoid Pigalle (the setting for Paris's red-light district). Head to the illuminated Basilique du Sacre-Coeur and relax on the white stone steps of the famed church. From here you'll get the best view of Paris that doesn't require an admission fee or lengthy wait. If that vista doesn't inspire love, tell your sweetheart it was the setting for U2's "Two Hearts Beat as One" video. And while it might make that engagement ring you bought dim in comparison, time your walk back so that you see the Eiffel Tower after nightfall: At the start of every hour until 2 a.m. (1 a.m in winter), its 20,000 bulbs glitter for 10 minutes. Central Park, New York City With 843 acres of lawns, woodlands, and lakes, Central Park is a relaxing retreat in the middle of Manhattan. If you can't find a romantic setting here, it's your fault, not that of the park's main designer, Frederick Law Olmsted, whose general plan for the park persists today despite many additions. In the winter, ice-skating at Wollman Rink is a great way to get your beloved's heart racing. Later, take a break for hot chocolate and popping the question. When the weather's warmer, the Conservatory Garden's six acres make a great proposal site—they're filled with hedges, as well as an impressive number of roses. Or propose marriage on a rowboat rented from the Loeb Boathouse. (While on a solo trip through Italy, I almost proposed to myself here.) The plaza attracts a lot of tourists, however, so make sure the subject of your wooing is looking out to the Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio, rather than at people dripping gelato on their jean shorts. Guidebooks suggest riding local bus No. 13 to Piazzale Michelangelo, but it's better to go by foot; it's a romantic 30-minute stroll through a charming part of Florence's Oltrarno district that you wouldn't otherwise visit. And public transportation is rarely romantic.

Scott Burnside: Bonjour, Pierre. Comment ça va? That's "How are you?" in French, as you well know, you noted bilingual. Wondered if we should try a scatter-gun approach to this week's edition as opposed to the finely honed focus we generally employ. For me, I'd like to stop in Edmonton first.

A lot of talk that this is the end for coach Craig MacTavish after his disastrous stick-measurement gambit against Anaheim went bad earlier this week. Only Lindy Ruff (Buffalo), Barry Trotz (Nashville) and Jacques Lemaire (Minnesota) have coached longer with their current teams, and MacTavish is a treat to work with from the media perspective. Do you think this is it, and, if so, who steps in? I think, barring a miracle finish, this is it. And wouldn't a guy like Tom Renney look good behind the Oilers bench?
Pierre LeBrun: I do indeed speak French and English, but it's the language of hockey that mattered Tuesday night when MacT gambled the season away on the stick call. Marty McSorley, where art thou? Funny thing is, if Teemu Selanne's stick ends up being illegal, the Oilers coach is a genius. Such is the fickle nature of our business. And I like the way MacTavish handled the fallout the next day -- took it like a man, answered questions about his future and didn't sound testy with the media at all. He's a real likeable character.
But will he last past this season? The new owner, Daryl Katz, apparently loves the guy (Dan Barnes of The Edmonton Journal reported Friday that Katz said MacT isn't going anywhere). Team president Kevin Lowe is very, very tight with MacTavish. But I still think the time has come. That's OK; MacT won't be without a job for too long, I can guarantee you that. Same goes for Renney, who I agree would be a great fit in Edmonton (if not Calgary, but I digress). But you touched on Ruff and his endurance in Buffalo. What would you do there?
Burnside: Talk about a team that is likewise done like dinner (sorry, Oilers and Sabres fans). Buffalo lost to Atlanta on Wednesday night, the second time it failed to defeat the Thrashers in the past couple of weeks; even though the Sabres earned a point in both cases, the points left on the table will haunt them through the summer.
I don't sense the same kind of unrest in Buffalo as there seems to be in Edmonton. The Sabres were without Thomas Vanek and Ryan Miller for key parts of the season, but I still don't think this team has found the leaders in the room to take them over the hump. You've mentioned it before: Craig Rivet comes over from San Jose and becomes the team's captain? Rivet is a terrific guy, but it doesn't say much for the group that has been in the Sabres' locker room the past three or four years and hasn't seen a leader step forward. What do you think, is it time for Ruff? Not to sound like Renney's agent or anything, but the Sabres are another team that would, I think, thrive under Renney's tutelage.

In a city where you can drink a beer for 20 CZK, and eat a good meal for under 100 CZK, it's easy to live comfortably while always having the essentials. It's when you step outside of the necessity department, however, that your money begins to slip away exponentially, leaving you in the pub with tattered jeans and a belly full of greasy food. That's not the worst thing in the world, but jobs and/or dates don't often find these to be the most charming qualities. To the bemusement of many, the clothes in Prague are just as expensive, if not more so, than in most Western countries. While shopping in Prague isn't always easy or cheap, it's possible to find some good deals, and stylish attire that's worth sacrificing a little pivo money for. WENCESLAS SQUAREWith trendy stores continuing to crop up on Wenceslas Square and in Prague's malls, you can't swing an H&M bag without hitting another popular chain -- or H&M. The major department stores are always easy to locate, and handy for finding the basic staples for your wardrobe. The shopping area in Wenceslas Square is basically an over-sized outdoor mall, with all the shopping giants within arms reach -- Marks & Spencer, Zara, Diesel, Benetton... The square is a nice way to go because not only are you right in the heart of the city but the stores are generally a bit larger than the stores in the malls; which means wider selections of new lines, and sale racks that aren't quite so picked over. From Spain, Mango is a popular favorite. There are options for stylish garments if you want to spend some cash, but there are numerous rows of items on sale as well. Located on Na Příkopě, Mango is a hip store for women, with an abundance of styles to choose from. The spacious interior is adorned with chandeliers, high ceilings, and patient boyfriends. As mentioned above, a popular choice for many is the trusty and never-disappointing Swedish company H&M. Around Wenceslas Square alone, there are two. The first is located on the square itself and caters to a younger crowd. Just down the street, on Na Příkopě, you'll find the sister store, which has clothes geared more toward the working crowd. Both stores provide for men and women, and the latter has children's clothes as well. What H&M stores are good for are their sale racks and trendy styles. What it's not so good for is anonymity. Just as you were excited to find that striped tank top for 400 CZK, so were about 20 other shoppers, as you'll discover when you strut your new purchase.

Are you a teenager wondering how to spend the summer? You can’t go wrong with these classic teen jobs. (Air conditioning not included.)
Lifeguard
Being a lifeguard looks like the easiest teen job out there. You sit on a high chair, twirl your whistle and tan-right? Actually, there’s a bit more to it. Becoming a lifeguard requires extensive training, including swimming tests, written tests and CPR certification. Once you have your basic certification, (in most places you must be at least 15 years old), you have to decide what kind of lifeguard job fits you best.
Working at a hotel pool or small community pool is a good choice for teens looking for a relaxing lifeguarding job. There are generally fewer swimmers and no diving area or deep end. This job can be boring-on overcast days you may find yourself playing a lot of solitaire-but be careful to stay alert. You may also be responsible for testing the water each hour, adjusting pool chemicals and cleaning the bathrooms (fun).
Working at a big pool or water park is the perfect job for teenagers who want an action-packed day. You’ll be part of a large lifeguard team watching hundreds of people, including hordes of rambunctious kids. You may also administer swimming tests and teach swimming lessons (this can earn you a little extra cash). Staying alert is essential-you will have to rescue people.
Teens who are serious adrenaline junkies should look into beach lifeguarding jobs. You have to be in top physical shape for these positions; applicants often have to compete for open positions in swimming and running tests. Beach lifeguard pay is usually high for a teen job, from $16 to $25 per hour.
Theme park worker
There are tons of summer job opportunities for teens in amusement parks-the trick is picking one you’ll enjoy. Do you have the stamina to prance around in a SpongeBob SquarePants costume all day? Can you handle wearing lederhosen and serving bratwurst? How about shouting “Please keep your hands inside the car at all times” 500 times a day?
Parks offer seasonal teen jobs in admissions, clean-up, food service, games , security and more. The work itself can be repetitive and the pay is generally a dollar or two above minimum wage, but the people-watching’s always entertaining. You may meet teens from other countries who come to the U.S. to work. Hey, it’s good to have a friend in Spain!
The best part of having a theme park job is the perks, like free park admission. If you’re a roller coaster junkie, you may start coming to work even on your days off. And you’ll suddenly become more popular when your friends find out you have a stack of free tickets.
Camp counselor
One of the best summer jobs for teens is working as a camp counselor. In just three months you bond with kids, get in shape and make close friends. You might even find a little romance on a moonlit canoe trip. Did we mention you’re living far away from your parents?
There are hundreds of summer camps in the U.S.-some single-sex, some co-ed. Some camps focus on athletics or riding and some are designed for campers with disabilities. Not sure if singing “Kumbaya” is really your thing? Adventurous teens should check out jobs at wilderness camps, which focus more on physical challenges and outdoor survival.
The salary depends on your title but generally ranges from $1800 to $3000 for the summer. Compared to other teen jobs, that works out to a pretty paltry hourly wage, considering you’re on duty almost 24-7. Room and board is typically free, however. On your days off you can have fun with your fellow counselors by hiking, swimming or catching a movie in town.
The downsides? Cleaning the bathrooms, dealing with pushy parents and handling that one kid who throws rocks at hornets’ nests and cheats at Capture the Flag.
